Brave New Food challenges disruptive start-ups in quest for healthy future food

24 Jun 2021 — Brave New Food has launched the search for “healthy food solutions,” for its innovation acceleration platform which includes several F&B key players like FrieslandCampina, Bonduelle and the Kraft Heinz Company. 

Brave New Food says it’s now “even more interesting” for start-ups and scale-ups to pitch in the quest for healthy food of the future. 

More than 200 start-ups and scale-ups from primarily European countries participated in the first open call, which was all about sustainability. Eighty-seven of these were invited, and after 130 one-on-one interviews, more than 70 follow-ups took place.

Nine out of 10 people getting SNAP benefits struggle to access a healthy diet, new study shows

Almost 90 percent of people receiving SNAP — the federal food assistance program formerly known as food stamps — are struggling to access healthy food, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) study released Wednesday.

The nearly 42 million Americans receiving SNAP benefits are one of the most food insecure populations in the country, and more than half responding to a survey said they simply can’t afford the kind of nutritious food that makes up a healthy diet, the study revealed. Food stamps: USDA focuses on cost of healthy meals amid benefits revamp

Nearly 9 in 10 participants face barriers to providing themselves and their families with nutritious food, the agency said Wednesday. The most common hurdle, reported by 61% of enrollees, is cost. Smaller shares said they lack time to prepare food from scratch (30%), need transportation to the grocery store (19%) or don’t have storage for fresh or cooked food (14%).
