When Dawn Marquez goes grocery shopping at Shima’s Supermarket in Waimanalo, her children aren’t just in tow — they’re leading the charge toward their favorites. Her 7-year-old son Laakea makes a beeline for the cucumbers and her 6-year-old daughter Lilinoe heads for the apple bananas.

Dawn attributes their choices to a program called DA BUX, which doubles the value of government food assistance when that assistance is used to buy qualifying local food items, like the cucumbers and apple bananas her children now seek out.

Essex Westford School District Distributes 500,000th free school meal and counting since March

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Food insecurity continues to be a major issue around the country and local school districts are combatting it with free meals for students. Essex Westford School district hit quite the milestone on Friday, hitting its 500,000th free school meal since March, and they were here on Friday handing out nearly 2000 more meals to kids 18 and under, something they do every week.

“My kids love the food so it helps the community and it helps us so it’s great,” says Danette Fleishman who was picking up food for her kids.

Food Distribution At Phoenixville HS Now Includes Tuesday PickUp

PHOENIXVILLE, PA — The food distribution program in Phoenixville Area School District has added a new day and time to pick up meals at the high school.

In addition to the Wednesday distribution already in place, food pickup will also be available on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Phoenixville Area High School drop-off loop across from Washington Field, according to an announcement from PASD School Board of Directors President Blake Emmanuel.

The added Tuesday distribution begins on Feb. 2. Emmanuel’s announcement said distribution included breakfast and lunch for anyone ages 0-18 and added, “No questions asked, just show up.”

USDA: pandemic EBT benefits are now retroactive, and will apply to kids 0-6

“Within one week, the USDA is executing on the president’s directive and getting more money into the hands of kids and families who need it,” Stacy Dean, who last week was named deputy undersecretary for the Agriculture Department’s food, nutrition and consumer services, told The Washington Post. “We are committed to acting quickly so states can set up and deploy these programs right away.”

The initiative increases pandemic food assistance benefits, intended for those children who would have qualified for subsidized school meals were schools in session, by 16 percent. Children 0-6 will now also be eligible.
