When it comes to fast food, it’s widely understood that an excess of calories can be lurking anywhere, even (or especially!) in the salads. Not that high calorie counts are nefarious in and of themselves, of course; it’s just that if you’re looking for the “lightest” thing on the menu, it might not be as straightforward as selecting the item with the most vegetables or the word “fresh” in the name. Most fast food chains, at this point, have gotten into the free food game—throwing certain complimentary menu items in with your order when you buy something else. Occasionally, you’ll get truly lucky and it’ll be a no-purchase-necessary situation.
Some chains—like Krispy Kreme, for example—are pretty consistent with their food promotions. Theirs typically involve purchasing a dozen of some type of doughnut, and then getting a dozen of their original glazed doughnuts either for free, or at a discount.
