A security guard for rapper Kodak Black was shot early Monday morning in the parking lot of a Tallahassee McDonald’s by individuals in a car, who police say were following him and his entourage before opening fire.
At about 3 a.m., Black, who was in Tallahassee as the headliner at the Cultur3Fest, and his entourage were leaving Baja’s Beach Club on Pensacola Street when they were followed by several vehicles who attempted to cut them off, according to preliminary incident reports by the Tallassee Police Department.
TPD Spokeswoman Alicia Turner confirmed the shooting outside the Dewey Street fast food eatery and that one person was seriously injured but could not provide additional details, according to the Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network.
According to preliminary investigative reports obtained by the Democrat, Black’s group went to the McDonald’s on Tennessee and Dewey Streets and blocked the entrance with a vehicle. Black insisted on going inside the store to pick up his order, despite his security team attempting to do so instead.
The same vehicle that gave chase earlier appeared in the parking lot, left and then returned when its occupants began shooting, according to preliminary reports.
A security guard was shot in the leg and taken to a Tallahassee hospital, and Black was rushed away in an armored vehicle.
As of Monday, the security guard was undergoing surgery after being shot in the femoral artery.
The owner operator of the McDonald’s, Raphael Vazquez, issued a statement about the shooting, saying it did not happen on the restaurant’s property but in the adjoining street.
“We are aware of the incident that happened on the street in front of our restaurant,” Vazquez wrote in an emailed statement. “Our biggest priority is always the safety and well-being of our employees and customers. We are fully cooperating with the Tallahassee Police Department, who will provide all updates on this investigation.”
Cultur3Fest was a large all-day music festival held at Tenn Nightclub, at the Tennessee Street strip, over the weekend. Black was among several artists who performed at the outdoor, 18-and-older event.
Black has released three albums including his debut album “Painting Pictures,” which peaked on the Billboard charts at No. 3. His second album in 2018, “Dying to Live” went to No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200. His third album, “Bill Israel,” was released last year while he was incarcerated in federal prison after he was detained at the U.S.-Canadian border with a pistol and faced another weapons charge from a Miami arrest a year later.
In January, former President Donald Trump commuted Black’s federal sentence for his 2020 conviction.
